As with strength sports it is equally important to provide the energy needed to perform minimising draining the energy reserves. That is why shortly before exercise athletes benefit from taking some carbohydrates and immediately after exercise some carbohydrate & protein mix to recover.
Endurance athletes would favour replenishing muscle glycogen stores whilst strength athletes would favour more protein based products to help replenish and build muscle perhaps also using amino acids, creatine and arginine supplements
In endurance events and intensive weight training fatigue will eventually set in and when this happens it can be beneficial to use supplements designed to increase mental alertness. Products based on Caffeine, Taurine and Guarana stimulate the nervous system helping fight the effects of fatigue and squeeze out that little bit extra performance.
